Flora and Fauna of the New Worlds
The Discoveries led to a wide transfer of plants and animals between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
Years: 1415 — 1543
The Discoveries made possible the knowledge of a highly varied fauna and flora, in many cases unknown in Europe. The Portuguese discovered the existence of fabulous creatures never seen before and increased knowledge of others such as the elephant and rhinoceros.
The knowledge of the flora coming from the new worlds revealed by the Portuguese and the Spanish had enormous consequences for the diffusion of plants. Especially important was the introduction into Europe of maize, potatoes, and tobacco from America, and of sugar cane into America from Europe.
