Cartography
Cartography throughout the 14th-16th centuries played a significant role in the expansion of the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula.
Years: 1400 — 1600
Portuguese cartography of the 15th and 16th centuries reflects a vision of the world unknown until then. Having sailed along the coasts of almost every continent and every island, the Portuguese were able to discern its outline in a much more accurate manner.
The maps designed by Portuguese cartographers enjoyed a high international reputation for they were endowed with great rigor, resulting from careful observations and from systematic registering of geographical information. They therefore exerted great influence on the cartography of other countries.
