India and Ceylon
Goa became the Portuguese capital of the “State of India”.
Years: 1506 — 1510
The coast of India was scouted by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. Impossible to succeed in Calicut, good relations were nevertheless established with Cochin and Cananor. In 1510, Goa was conquered, becoming the capital of the “State of India”. The great buildings erected between the 16th and 17th centuries confirm, even today, the importance of the city during that period as a political, military, economic, and religious center.
Thousands of Portuguese settled in the East, where marriage to Indian women became a frequent practice. The settlers established very profitable trade agreements between the different regions of Asia. For instance, from Ceylon, which had been known by the Portuguese since 1506 and where they held considerable influence, came large amounts of the finest cinnamon.
