East Africa

The Island of Mozambique assumed prominence in Portugal’s campaign to take over trade with India and the East Indies after being claimed by Vasco da Gama in 1498.

Years:  1498 — 1505

The first reconnoiter of East Africa by the Portuguese occurred in 1498 when the fleet of Vasco da Gama was search for a route to India.  The Portuguese had been established since the beginning of the 16th century on the Island of Mozambique.  This is where, in 1507, a first fortification was built to support the sea route to India, as well as African trade.  The other important settlement dominated by the Portuguese was Sofala.  Here, in 1505, a fortress was also built to secure the gold trade coming from the Kingdom of Monomotapa.
