On the Way to the Cape of Good Hope
Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488.
Years: 1482 — 1488
In 1482, Dom João II sent Diogo Cão to explore the African coast south of the Equator to discover the extremity of Southern Africa and a link between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Diogo Cão discovered the River Zaire, and in another voyage in 1485 reached Serra Parda. Though failing in his intended objective, Cão established friendly relations with the Kingdom of the Congo.
It was not until 1488 that Bartolomeu Dias would round the Cape of Good Hope. This designation clearly represents Dom João II’s engagement in reaching India by rounding the southernmost point of Africa.
