The Medieval West shared an incomplete image of the world, which was largely a legacy of Greco-Latin culture.  It was thought, for example, that the Southern Hemisphere was uninhabitable and that it concealed a great diversity of fabulous creatures.

At the close of the 14th century, existing civilizations lived in self-imposed isolation and their awareness of each other was very limited at best or even non-existent.
